How to Create Cannabis Hash: Understanding the Process

Hash, or hashish, is one of the oldest cannabis products. It is made by separating the resin glands (trichomes) from the cannabis plant by sifting and then compressing them. As a result of this process, you get a dense, fragrant block (or ball) of highly concentrated and extremely powerful cannabis.

Materials & Ingredients Needed

Step 1: Getting Your Cannabis Ready

Take the high-quality cannabis flower or trim and place it in the freezer for several hours. When the trichomes become brittle due to the cold, they will be much easier to separate from the plant material.

Step 2: Collecting the Resin (Kief)

Collecting the resin from the cannabis is easy to do via dry inspection:

Spread the cannabis flower or trim evenly across the fine mesh screen of the sifter.
Rub or shake the material gently to sift the trichomes.
As you sift, the trichomes will fall through the mesh screen and collect on top of it as a golden powder referred to as kief. The longer you sift, the better your kief will be.

Step 3: Turning Your Kief Into Hash

Once you have separated enough kief, you can turn it into hash. You have two methods of doing this: hand pressing or mechanical pressing.

Hand Pressing the Kief:

This is the traditional method of making hash. To make a hash using the hand pressing method, you need to take some of the kief and warm it up with your palms, and then continue to press it down until it gets darker in color and sticks together. After warming and pressing, the kief should form balls of hash.

Using a Press:

Some companies have created pollen press or rosin press. The pollen press or rosin press heats the kief and applies the right amount of pressure, so that the kief becomes a compressed hash. Regardless of whether you choose to hand press or mechanically press the kief, you are essentially compressing the trichomes, allowing the natural oils within the trichomes to be released, creating the color, texture and aroma of the kief.

Ice Water Hash (Bubble Hash)

Another way to create cannabis hash:

Place the cannabis and ice into a large bucket of ice water.
Stir the mixture slowly and gently, knocking the trichomes that include the THC, CBD and other natural chemicals off the cannabis.
Strain the cannabis pulp through mesh bags (also referred to as bubble bags). The bubble bags will absorb moisture but allow the trichomes to pass through the mesh.
The bags will progressively decrease in mesh size, resulting in multiple layers of resin (each layer having less moisture) from each successive layer, providing you with an ample supply of resin from each layer.
Allow the resin to dry.

How to Smoke Hash

Hash can be smoked in a wide variety of ways and forms:

You can crumble the hash and sprinkle it on top of a hash and weed joint.
You can also smoke it in the bowl, or in a bong.
You can use a vaporizer and there are specific vaporizers designed for smoking concentrates.
You can also infuse the hash into edibles after decarboxylating the hash so the edible will have a range of release times for the THC and CBD.
