How to Make Edible Cannabis: Simple Recipes and Pro Tips
Using cannabis as an ingredient for cooking is straightforward, however there is a scientific aspect that requires attention. In order to make edibles successful, the type of fat you use, how much cannabis you add to your recipe, the temperature you cook at, and when you add these items to your recipe are all important considerations.
Step 1 — Decarboxylation
Raw cannabis will not have an effect on you, therefore you must convert THCA to THC by applying heat to the raw product. To decarboxylate your cannabis you can do the following:
- Preheat your oven to 110-115°C (230-240°F).
- Break your favourite bud into small pieces, and avoid grinding them into a powder.
- Use parchment paper so the cannabis does not stick.
- Bake for 30-40 minutes.
- Allow the cannabis to cool completely prior to adding to other ingredients to prevent burning.
Temperature plays a large factor in this process. The higher the temperature, the more likely you will burn your cannabinoids.
“After I decarb at 150°C I was wondering why my brownie wasn’t getting me high enough. It wasn’t until I decreased my temp, and began to use lower temps for my infusions, that I saw major changes” — Mark, Manchester
Step 2 — Infusion — Which Type of Fat Should You Use?
As we discussed above, THC is attracted to fat, which is why the process of infusion is now available.
| Fat % | Best Use | Simmer Time | Notes |
| Unsalted Butter | Brownies, Cookies | 2-3 Hours | Strong Flavor |
| Coconut Oil | Gummies, Vegan Baking | 2-3 Hours | Fastest Fat %, High Fat Content |
| Olive Oil | Savory Dishes | 1.5-2 Hours | Lower Temp Required |
In order to create a basic infused fat you will need to follow these steps:
- Combine decarboxylated cannabis with the fat of your choice.
- Slowly heat the cannabis/fat mixture until the fat has melted, and then continue to simmer the mixture over low heat (80-95°C) for the recommended time based on the type of fat you are using.
- Once the infusion has been completed, pour the mixture through cheesecloth to separate the fat from the plant material.
- Store the infused fat in your refrigerator.
Dosage Chart
The dose of your final product depends on the potency of your initial flower. Here is an example of how to calculate the dose:
5g flower at 20% THC = 1000 mg total THC
After infusion loss of approximately 15%, you have approximately 850 mg of usable THC.
If your recipe produces 20 portions:
850 mg ÷ 20 = ~42 mg per serving (very strong)
| Dose Levels | Recommended Dosages |
| Beginner users | 2.5–5 mg |
| Occasional Users | 5–10 mg |
| Experienced users | 15–25 mg |
Safety Tips for Creating:
- Do not cook your infused fats above 160°C.
- Clearly label every item made with cannabis.
- Store all cannabis products out of reach of minors and pets.
- All products should be stored in an air-tight container in the refrigerator.
Reliable Cannabis Edible Recipe Ideas
- Classic Brownie. Exchange regular butter with infused butter and bake at 170°C.
- No-Bake Gummies. Use coconut oil that has been infused.
- Savory Garlic Oil. Use olive oil that has been infused. More easily micro-dosable.
If you plan to create cannabis edibles recipes, begin with the basics before creating complex baked goods.
Most people do not know the following:
- Edibles can take 6–8 hours, possibly longer to kick in.
- When you eat something, it affects how fast your body absorbs cannabis.
- Increased fat content increases the bioavailability of cannabis.
- Adding CBD to your cannabis products may reduce the perceived intensity of THC.
Better flowers for Better results
The quality of your infusion is directly related to the quality of your starting materials. Low-quality or poorly cured cannabis creates low-quality edibles.
