It’s not easy to make sense of this fast-changing field. As far as British law is concerned, Cannabis is a class b controlled substance — which puts it into the same category as amphetamines. Therefore, the production, sale and consumption of Cannabis are considered crimes. The UK also allows doctors to prescribe medical Cannabis to patients. That is why so many politicians are perplexed about the contradictions in their own laws. - Possession If you’re found guilty of possessing five grams or fewer of Cannabis, you may get a prison sentence of up to five years or a fine (or both). Most of the time when someone is convicted of their first offense for personal use, they’ll get off with nothing more than a warning or a community resolution. - Sale/selling/Supply/distribution/traffic If you’re accused of selling/supplying/distributing/trafficking any amount of Cannabis, you could receive a prison term of up to 14 years — as well as an unlimited fine. Under British law, “Supply” refers to providing Cannabis to a friend for free (and therefore does not include paying for it). - Growing/cultivating/manufacturing You could spend up to 14 years in jail for growing/cultivating/manufacturing any amount of Cannabis — including just one plant in your home, whatever the reason. - Medicinal use of Cannabis Doctors are allowed to prescribe medicinal Cannabis in the u.k. After November 2018. Due to the strict guidelines established by the national health service (NHS), few people are able to access medical Cannabis through the NHS; instead, most rely on private companies to provide them with what they need. ## CBD products are legal in the UK Any product that contains cannabidiol (CBD) as long as it has less than 0.2% THC is legal in the u.k. — and is not subject to the Misuse of Drugs Act. Examples of CBD products include oils, capsules, topicals and edible products — as long as they contain less than .2% THC. Over 50 jurisdictions have introduced some form of reform since 2000; none has meaningfully reversed course. The remaining question for countries like the UK is not whether reform will come, but how slowly it will arrive — and how many people will navigate the existing legal system in the meantime.
