Use either frozen trim or small buds. Utilizing fresh-frozen material will yield brighter terpenes; utilizing cured material will produce a deeper “hashy” note. Maintain the temperature of the water between 0–4°C throughout the entire process (add ice frequently); do not shred the leaves – your goal is to remove the trichomes from the leaves and not turn them into a liquid.

## Step-by-Step Process

 

**Preparation & Freezing.** Place the plant material on a tray and freeze completely; if possible, chill your buckets, bags, and water. Layer your bags from the smallest micron at the bottom to the largest micron (220 µm work bag) at the top in a clean bucket.

 

**Washing.** In a separate bucket (or small washing machine), place ice → plant material → ice → cold water until you achieve a thick slush. Gently stir the mixture for 5–8 minutes; cease stirring when the water begins to turn green. Allow the resin to settle for 2–3 minutes.

 

**Draining.** Carefully pour the mixture through your bag stack. Slowly raise each bag allowing it to drain; once drained, rinse the resin with ice-cold water to remove any microcontaminants.

 

**Collection.** Using a spoon or card, carefully lift the patty from each bag and transfer it to parchment paper. Label your bags by micron – 90 and 73 are generally the top choices; 45/25 may also be used.

 

**Drying (Important).** Freeze drying (18–36 hours) is preferred, however, if you do not have a freeze dryer, you may microplane or crumble the patties into loose granules while they are still cold and then dry them in a cool environment (15–20°C, 35–45% RH) for 5–7 days with minimal airflow. Damp hash may form.

 

**Curing & Storage.** After the hash is completely dry, place it in a loose jar for several days, and then seal it and keep it in a cold, dark area away from direct sunlight.

- Perform multiple short washing cycles versus one single, longer washing cycle – performing 2 or 3 gentle pulling cycles and combining like micron grades will help reduce loss of trichomes during washing.
- If the color of the hash begins to trend toward green, you are either agitating too aggressively or the water is too warm; add ice, reduce the length of the next wash cycle, and rinse more.
- Wet or clumpy after a few days: did not dry completely. Re-granulate finer, extend dry time, lower humidity.
- Bad taste: over-agitated the plant material or poor rinsing. Be gentler, use colder water, rinse more.
- Terps Don’t Melt Well: Old/Oxidized Input or Incorrect Cut. Mix 90/73 Pulls; Reserve 45/25 for Edibles.
