Although “Alright” was their most popular song, their debut is notable for it becoming more psychedelic as well as strange as it progressed. Afterward, members recalled that once the studio weed had run out, their sessions became even more psychedelic. In this case, cannabis is less about getting stoned and writing one song while under its influence. Rather it’s the atmospheric conditions in which their album was created (experimentation, prolonged sessions, openness to go beyond standard Britpop). ## Avey Tare: Using cannabis to create right atmosphere for eucalyptus. Avey Tare is one of the clearest examples. The Animal Collective member has talked openly about writing a large portion of his solo album Eucalyptus while using marijuana. For him, marijuana helped establish a certain atmosphere. That helps explain Eucalyptus itself. Eucalyptus is disjointed (fragmented), immersive, dream like, where sounds flow together instead of adhering to normal pop forms. ## Alt-J: Smoked during the album creation process while writing sober Alt-J’s This Is All Yours is a great example as it is clearly differentiated between when the band wrote and recorded. The group stated that they smoked quite a bit of pot while making the album, however singer Joe Newman stated that he always composed while sober. Therefore, the presence of cannabis was possible while listening to demos, structuring ideas, sampling or talking through ideas. However it did not play a role when coming up with the original melody or lyrics. ## Tame Impala: Psychedelia does not automatically mean high. Kevin Parker has repeatedly spoken about cannabis influencing his way of hearing sound. Given that Tame Impala produces psychedelic music with repetitive themes and heavy usage of synthesizers (as well as psychedelic production), it would be easy to assume that the majority of their biggest songs were produced while high. Kevin Parker specifically mentioned two major hits (“Let It Happen”, “Feels Like We Only Go Backwards”) were made while sober. This is a great contradiction to the assumption that psychedelic music has to be created by someone who is high. ## Damon Albarn and Tony Allen: Cannabis as part of collaborating Damon Albarn described a unique form of the relationship between cannabis and music. He said that Tony Allen basically educated him on how marijuana could be used as an element within the creative process. The experience was not purely about getting high. It was linked with rhythm, collaboration and finding an alternate mental tempo when working in the studio. Albarn attributed the first results of that approach to a track recorded for Allen’s HomeCooking project. It demonstrates how cannabis can be part of the chemical reaction between artists when working collaboratively as opposed to being solely based upon individual songwriting processes. ## What can cannabis actually change in a creative session? The accounts above illustrate how marijuana may enter at various levels of music development. As demonstrated by Supergrass’, Avey Tare, Alt-J, Tame Impala and Damon Albarn all demonstrate something different. Cannabis can enhance creativity, create an environmental context or sometimes be completely unrelated to when the actual song is developed. ## Cannabis, Music and Creativity are More Intricate Than Popular Myths Describe While some artists incorporate marijuana as part of the creative process (while writing), other artists choose to reserve marijuana for recording sessions or reviewing/listening to their recordings. Many others produce extremely psychedelic music entirely sober. Those factors make the relationships between cannabis and music culture so intriguing — there are no formulas.
